Shock compression and spallation of single crystal tantalum

چکیده
We present molecular dynamics simulations of shock-induced plasticity and spall damage in single crystal Ta described by a recently developed embedded-atom-method (EAM) potential and a volumedependent qEAM potential. We use impact or Hugoniotstat simulations to investigate the Hugoniots, deformation and spallation. Both EAM and qEAM are accurate in predicting, e.g., the Hugoniots and surfaces. Deformation and spall damage are anisotropic for Ta single crystals. Our preliminary results show that twinning is dominant for [100] and [110] shock loading, and dislocation, for [111]. Spallation initiates with void nucleation at defective sites from remnant compressional deformation or tensile plasticity. Spall strength decreases with increasing shock strength, while its rate dependence remains to be explored.

متن کاملTheory and Simulation of 1D to 3D Plastic Relaxation in Tantalum
In plane shockwaves the uniaxial strain rate can greatly exceed the rate at which dislocation flow can relax the concomitant shear stress. The result is an overdriven plastic state in which the compression is 1D uniaxial initially and only after a period of time does the lattice relax to a more 3D compressed state due to plastic flow. Here we use an analytic calculation based on a generalizatio...
متن کاملLarge-scale molecular dynamics simulations of shock induced plasticity in tantalum single crystals
We report on large-scale non-equilibrium molecular dynamics (NEMD) simulations of shock wave compression in Ta single crystals. The atomic interactions are modeled via a recently developed and optimized embedded-atom method (EAM) potential for Ta, which reproduces the equation of state up to 200 GPa. We examined the elastic-plastic transition and shock wave structure for wave propagation along ...
متن کاملThermogravimetric Study of Oxide Spallation for Chromium-Rich Cast Cobalt-Based and Iron-Based Alloys Oxidized at High Temperature
During temperature cycles, metallic alloys for high temperature applications are usually oxidized with formation of an external protective oxide scale, but they loose it during the cooling. This problem of oxide spallation can be studied by specific tests of cyclic oxidation but first indications can be provided by analyzing the cooling parts of thermogravimetry curves. This possibility was stu...
متن کاملA Parametric Study of Laser Induced Thin Film Spallation
We report parametric studies of elastic wave generation by a pulsed laser and associated spalling of thin surface films by the corresponding high stresses. Two different substrate materials, single crystal Si (100) and fused silica, are considered. Spallation behavior of Al thin films is investigated as a function of substrate thickness, film thickness, laser energy, and various parameters gove...
